How does solar thermal (water heating) work?

-Heat from the sun warms the solar panels.

-A sensor on the panel feels the heat and signals the controller to start a pump.

-The pump transfers the heated liquid to a hot water tank.

-Hot water is available for use as normal.

-An electric element on the water heater or a tank-less gas or electric element heats the water when there is either insufficient sun or larger than normal hot water usage.

-Once the sun goes down or when the water is sufficiently warm, the pump stops.
